Protest against the rape of the minor girl by 5 cops of Chandigarh Police

Students of Panjab University are not in any mood to tolerate the heinous act of the cops of Chandigarh police . Friday in late evening about 250 students held a protest at students centre against the sexual violence inflicted of a minor girl. The students and the members of Civil society raised slogan against the patriarchal attitude of the UT police. The protest was organized by Students for Society (SFS) and the students marched from students centre to PU market via girls hostel.

           SFS President Arishdeep said, "The real face of Chandigarh police has been exposed by this incident. It is the same police that registered FIR on students protesting on the issue of delhi gang rape last year." He also added that it is the same police that makes hue and cry about the security and reduces the whole issue of gender equality to mere security. However, security is not the issue at all but the patriarchal setup so deep rooted in our society.

Bhai Gurbaksh Singh has been sitting on indefinite hunger strike since 14th November, for the release of Sikh political prisoners languishing in jails. However no authority (both the state govt. and centre) has positively responded on the matter. More disturbing is the fact that he was arrested at midnight by a squad of the Punjab Police dressed in plain clothes, posing as supporters of the protest. This incident brings forward the shameful fascist character of the state to suppress any dissent voice. There are more than 100 persons imprisoned in the cases regarding the militant movement in Punjab.

         However, it must be understood that these are not ordinary criminal cases but have deep political content instead of any personal reasons. The root cause of that movement lies in the unjust center - state relations and demand for greater autonomy for the states. However, instead of addressing  the political questions beneath the problem, the governments ruthlessly suppress dissidents  by prosecuting them under various draconian laws, torture them in cells or even the kill them in Fake encounters.

As we all are aware of the fact that the fee of various courses has been increased by the university authorities in recent days. This outrageous decision has been taken in the period just before the commencement of the December exams. Although, no circular has been issued but the increments in fee ranging from 10-30% for various courses has been notified to their respective departments. As per the notices displayed the fee hike is about 20,000 in BE-MBA UICET, 6,000 in BE-Chem & FT, 2,500 in Physics, 7,000 in  Physics & Electronics, 1,500 in MA economics, 3,000 in BA (HS) economics, 14,000 in UIET and 20,000 in MCA. Similarly, increments have been made in other departments also.

Friends, we must not forget that it is the same period when the mess diet charges were increased last year.  It is evident that this time is precisely chosen to avoid any kind of resistance from the students. And also the fee is mostly increased in the case of the students of the first year in order to establish it in the next years without much resistance.

So we shouldn’t let ourselves be fooled by such tactics. The issue shouldn’t be considered an issue of only the first year students. This policy of authorities can’t be seen in isolation from the essence of education policy of the government which lies in rapid privatization and commercialization reducing it to a mere business. SFS appeals to the students to join us in this struggle against these policies in general and the fee hike in particular.

THE GHADAR CONTINUES…

“56 years have passed since the Ghadar of 1857, now there is urgent need of the second one…” -- Ghadar,  1 November, 1913

Above lines were published in the first issue of the Ghadar newspaper of the November 1913. April 2013 marks the birth centenary of the Hindustan Ghadar party, which was formed by the

Indians living in North America with the aim to liberate their country from the British imperialism. The Ghadar movement emerged as an opposition to our economic and political slavery. The Ghadarites were greatly influenced by the mutiny of 1857. The British exploited Indian agriculture and domestic industry for their own profits and this totally devastated the Indian economy. This economic downturn and exploitation of the Indians forced many poor and unemployed Indians to seek labor in the newly prospering cities of America and Canada. However, they encountered the similar problems on economic and social levels because they were treated as people coming from a British colony. The emigrants and labourers from the other countries met with the similar discrimination. Whereas the Japanese and Chinese governments raised voice in favour of the emigrants from their countries, there was no one to raise voice for the Indians. From here it became clear to them what it means to be a resident of free country. The ideas of revolution, equality and democracy in America enlightened the Indians that this freedom is very much related to the Indian freedom. This created the very base to enhance their political understanding. The history of the Ghadar movement is too enormous to cover in two or three pages. The Ghadar movement contributed formidably to the national liberation struggle.

ਉਪਰੋਕਤ ਸਤਰਾਂ ਗ਼ਦਰ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਦੇ ਨਵੰਬਰ 1913 ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਅੰਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਛਪੀਆਂ ਸਨ | ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 2013 ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨੀ ਗ਼ਦਰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਨੂੰ 100 ਸਾਲ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਕਿ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਭਾਰਤੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਬਸਤੀਵਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਸੀ | ਗ਼ਦਰ ਲਹਿਰ ਸਾਡੀ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜਸੀ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਲਹਿਰ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਕਿ 1857 ਦੇ ਵਿਦ੍ਰੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਸੀ | ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਣਾਈਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦੀ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਉਦਯੋਗ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿੱਤਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਢਾਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਰਥਚਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ | ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਬੇਰਹਿਮ ਲੁੱਟ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਗਰੀਬ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਭਾਰਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਖ਼ਾਸਕਰ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਆਬਾਦ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮਜਬੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ | ਉੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਭਾਰਤੀਆ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗਾ ਸਲੂਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਉੱਥੇ ਵੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀ ਹੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ | ਪਰਵਾਸੀ ਭਾਰਤੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਏ ਕਾਮਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿੱਤ ਹੀ ਵਿਤਕਰੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਜਾਪਾਨ ਤੇ ਚੀਨ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੁਲਕ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਉੱਥੇ ਭਾਰਤੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਗੱਲ੍ਹ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਇਥੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਮੁਲਕ ਦੇ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਨੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ | ਇੱਥੇ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ, ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਮਹੂਰੀਅਤ ਨੇ ਪਰਵਾਸੀ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਚੇਤਨਾ ਜਗਾਈ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਵੀ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ | ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਸਮਝ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਆਧਾਰ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋਇਆ | ਗ਼ਦਰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਜਾਂ ਗ਼ਦਰੀ ਬਾਬਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਇਹਨਾਂ  ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਜਾਂ ਦੋ ਵਰਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੋਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ | ਗ਼ਦਰ ਲਹਿਰ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕੌਮੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਤੇ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਇਆ |

ਪੀ.ਯੂ. ਕੈਂਪਸ 'ਚ ਜਮਹੂਰੀਅਤ ਦੀ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਬਹਾਲੀ ਲਈ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਕਰੋ

ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਜੱਥੇਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਦਿਨੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਪਤ ਹੋਣ ‘ਤੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਧਿਰਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ-ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਦੇ ਦਾਅਵੇ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਥੱਕ ਰਹੀਆਂ। ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਅਜੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਫ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਿੱਤ ਕਿਸਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਪਰ ਇੱਕ ਗੱਲ ਸਾਫ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੀ.ਯੂ. ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰੀ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਾਰ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਘਟਨਾਕ੍ਰਮ 'ਚ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸ਼ਨ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਜ਼ਾਕ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ 'ਚ ਪੀ.ਯੂ. ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਛਾਉਣੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੀ.ਯੂ. 'ਚ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਤੱਕ ਅਸਧਾਰਨ ਰੂਪ ‘ਚ ਖ਼ਾਮੋਸ਼ੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਘਪਲੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਇਲਜ਼ਾਮਾਂ 'ਚ ਘਿਰੇ ਪਾਏ ਗਏ। ਇੱਕ ਪਾਸੇ NSUI ਵੱਲੋਂ ਚੋਣ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਦਾ ਐਲਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਦਬਾਅ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਕਈ ਜੱਥੇਬੰਦੀਆਂ (PUSU +SOPU +SOI +ABVP +SFI +INSO +HSA) ਵੀ.ਸੀ. ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ NSUI ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਦੇ ਉਮੀਦਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਪਰਚਾ ਰੱਦ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸੀ। ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿੱਖਰ 'ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਇਸ ਡਰਾਮੇ ਨੇ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸ਼ਨ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਾਸੜ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ NSUI ਦਾ ਪੱਖ ਪੂਰਿਆ ਤੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਘਪਲੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਇਲਜ਼ਾਮ ਲਗਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਜਮਹੂਰੀਅਤ(ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰੀ ਹੱਕਾਂ) ਦੀ ਬਹਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਕਤ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਕਰਨ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਪੀ. ਯੂ. ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਲਈ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਇਹ ਲੜਾਈ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾਂ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੁਰਖ਼ੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਬਣੀ।

RAISE YOUR VOICE FOR COMPLETE DEMOCRATISATION OF PU CAMPUS

When the recent protest by various organizations ended, both sides claimed themselves to be victorious. Well, we don’t know who won the complete battle but one thing is sure that democratic space of students in PU campus was on the losing side. In the whole scenario the university authorities made complete mockery of student politics. PU in recent days appeared more like a police camp than an educational institute. The election period this time was unusually quiet in PU, until the time of result on the day of elections came about. For first time the results were surrounded by the allegations of rigging. On one hand the NSUI supporters were pressing for declaration of results while on the other hand many other parties (PUSU+SOPU+SOI+ABVP +SFI+INSO+HSA) were protesting in front of the VC office demanding the cancellation of nomination of NSUI presidential candidate. The drama in its culmination made it abundantly clear that the authorities were biased in favour of NSUI and also that the other organizations instead of struggling for student democracy reduced the whole issue to mere power struggle. The cat fight that followed the results became the headline for local dailies.
